I've never really been one for Valentines's Day. I've always thought of it as a commercial holiday. I've always held the theory that if you love me, you should show me more than one day a year.
Even when my it became my husband and I's first date, it wasn't a magical date that had to be celebrated. But a few years ago, I found these mailboxes and I thought they might be fun for the girls. They have been and it's flipped my stance on Valentines's Day.
While I still firmly believe that love should be shown more than just one day a year (if you're going to buy me flowers, buy them when they're cheap please), I've found a lot of pleasure in the holiday.
It starts mid January and continues through Valentines's Day. I find little things to fill their mailboxes with. Sometimes it's candy, sometimes a note, sometimes a little surprise, it doesn't matter, every day they're eager to open their mailbox.
So why the change of heart? My girls found absolute joy in being loved. That joy made me find more joy in celebrating Valentines's Day. I think each year it's started a little earlier than the year before (mostly because I love their excitement). They look forward to knowing that they're thought about and special in some little way each day. Valentines's is just an easy reminder for me to be more intentional in showing them.
Valentines's doesn't have to be just one day. The idea of love, showing love, and being loved is something we should show daily. Valentines's Day gets the credit for big grand gestures, but more times than not, it's a little note tucked in a mailbox, a box of Nerds (because they're a favorite), or simply an extra hug and an I love you that wins the day.
My heart's in Valentines's Day now, not for me (because again the commercial part of it kills me, don't spend a ton of money please), but for the joy that love brings to those I love. I hope that they'll continue to be excited and look forward to little acts of love throughout their lives. Hopefully not only will they love knowing that they're loved, but they'll love showing that same love to others.
